Where do i begin?
Law School Rankings
As you all know about our Advisor, law school rankings do not take into consideration diversity at law schools. With that being said, I know some of you may be making your law school choice with regards to rankings. That is why I still provide them here.
What's a "good" undergraduate major for law school?
Most law schools are looking for the completion of a bachelors degree from a regionally-accredited university - which UNM is - over specific majors. With that being said, there are majors that are more commonly seen from law school applicants. UNM offers Pre-Law concentrations in the Sociology and Philosophy majors.
What field of law might be right for you?
The Law School Admission Council offers an 18-question quiz to help you narrow down the areas of law that might excite or interest you. It is NOT a scientific tool.
What are law schools looking for in applicants?
There is not a "perfect" law school application. Law schools consider many components of one's application during review. Demographics for law schools are below. Might work best with a desktop, laptop or tablet.
What is the Law school admissions test (LSAT)?
Most law schools in the United States only accept the LSAT for admissions purposes. Some accept the LSAT or the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) for admissions. Be sure to check with the specific law school(s) you are considering to see which exam they'd prefer.
How can I prepare for the lsat?
This is the hardest question for our advisor, Cory. We recommend the LSAT prep material/company that works best for each individual. Khan Academy is a great place to start, and it is 100% free for everyone! Below is a list of a few options.
What can I read before law school?
A good start to see the climate of law school admissions is preLaw Magazine. It has different stories, information and rankings for what current law school applicants are looking for. A good website is Above the Law too!
WHat about LSAT Prep and law school materials?
A major barrier of entry to entering the legal field is the high cost of the entire journey. Financial barriers are much larger for historically underserved communities of color. Law Books for People of Color is a great place to receive, donate or support one's law school journey.
Are other law school applicants going through this too?
No matter how many times Cory tells you others are dealing with the same anxiety as you are individually while applying to law school, you'll still fee alone in the process sometimes. That's why we recommend some Reddit threads from students who are and have gone through the application process all over the country! Keep in mind that what you read should be done with a grain of salt.
Help paying for law school
While all law schools offer scholarships, and student loans are always an option to finance a legal education, students have limited options when it comes to paying for law school. Below is a link with outside scholarship opportunities across the country.
LSAT Help for UNM Pre-law ONLY
The link below is for UNM students ONLY. It will provide you with LSAT Practice Exams that you may need in your preparation for the LSAT. Again, this is for UNM students ONLY. Any unauthorized sharing with students outside of UNM will result in Cory deactivating the Drive.
This page is constantly updating. New information and updated links will be provided here moving forward.
